Abstract

Tafseer bil-Ma'thoor is an interpretation of the Qur'an that is based on the sayings, actions, and interpretations of the Companions and Tabi‘un. It utilizes direct Prophetic Hadith, the statements of the Companions, and other authentic sources from their time to explain the meanings of the Qur'anic verses. The aim of Tafseer bil-Ma'thoor is to provide the original and correct explanation of the Qur'an, so that the meaning of its verses reflects what was understood by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his Companions. During its evolution, in the early period, the interpretation of the Qur'an was mostly oral by the Companions and Tabi‘un. However, later on, these interpretations were compiled in written form. Scholars made extensive use of Mathur narrations in explaining the Qur'anic verses, and its influence is clearly seen in several famous exegeses, such as Tafseer ibn Jarir al-Tabari, Tafseer ibn Abi Hatim, and Tafseer ibn Kathir. This type of interpretation helps scholars to accurately understand the words and meanings of the Qur'an and is recognized as an important branch of Islamic knowledge.
